Berry-Gaviria Leads Mt. Ararat Boys To First State Title in 25 Years By Mary Albl of DyeStat Lisandro Berry-Gaviria may have just saved his best for his last state meet. On Saturday at the Maine High School Cross Country Championships at Cumberland's Twin Brook, the senior from Mt. Ararat clocked the fastest time of the day, running 15 minutes, 51.76 seconds to win his third Class A title and lead his team to the program's first championship in 25 years. Mt. Ararat placed four runners in the top 25 to score 84 points and hold off Bangor (91 points). The girls Class A race was won by Falmouth junior Sofie Matson in a time of 17:52.02. Matson, No. 23 in the latest DyeStat rankings, produced the fastest time of the day for any female runner en route to her third straight title. Teammate Karley Piers was second in 19:18.61. Bonny Eagle scored 72 points to win the team title. Falmouth was second (114 points). In Class B, it was a program sweep by the Greely girls and boys. Individually, Cape Elizabeth junior Lilia Gudrault won in 19:19.62, while Cape Elizbeth senior Jack Bassett won the boys title in 16:40.53. Olivia Reynolds of Maine Coast collected her third straight Class C title, running 19:44.66. Orono placed four in the top eight to repeat as team champs. In the boys Class C race, Will Perkins of Boothbay-Wiscasett won in 17:10.72, while Maine Coast Waldorf held off Orono, 50-57 to repeat as team champions. Sophomore Jonathan Schomaker of Leavitt won the wheelchair division in 34.41.64. Next up for the runners will be the New England Championships on Saturday in Manchester, Ct. at Wickham Park.
