Shooting In Lewiston And Ongoing Manhunt For Suspect Causes MPA To Move State Cross Country Meet To Nov. 4

The Maine high school cross country championships will be delayed a week in the wake of Wednesday's mass shooting incidents in Lewiston.

Lewiston was one of several Maine communities under shelter-in-place orders as authorities search for the suspect in a shooting spree that killed 18 people.

The Maine Principals' Association released news Thursday that sports contests across the state have been postponed until at least early next week.

Jorma Kurry, co-head cross country and track coach at Falmouth High said school was not open due the lack of an arrest in the case.

"With the situation still unresolved there is a lot of apprehension and anxiety in the air," Kurry said. "Most schools within a certain distance of Lewiston are not having school today (Friday), including us. We're about 30 miles away and not practicing sports either."

Even as the state meet looms, thoughts are elsewhere.

"This generation of students is certainly well informed on mental health and trauma and is aware of the need to allow those kids most affected to process and recover and I think there's a general understanding among coaches I've talked to that, while we'd all like to compete this week, there are more important things to deal with," Kurry said.
