Ruth White Goes Out In Style With Third State Title And Orono's Sixth Consecutive Team Win By Mary Albl of DyeStat In her final state championship race, Ruth White made sure she left the way she started. The Orono senior won her third straight Class C title Saturday at the Maine State Cross Country Championships at Troy Howard Middle School. White’s time of 16 minutes, 57.95 seconds was just shy of the course record she set last year. Orono had four runners finish in the top four to score 45 points and win the program’s sixth straight state title. Next up for White, who is committed to Boise State, will be the New England Championships held in Belfast, Maine. White is the two-time defending champion. In the boys Class C race, Sumner Memorial’s Kaleb Colton led his team to a state title and posted the second-fastest time of the day, clocking 15:48.28 for the victory. The York girls claimed the Class B crown with Cary Drake winning the race in 18:08.47. In Class B boys action, Lake Region’s Sam Laverdiere won the title in 15:52.36. The team battle was close as Freeport scored 55 points and York was second (63). Portland High junior Samantha Moore won the Class A title, while Bonny Eagle claimed the program’s fifth-straight title with a narrow win over Camden Hills: 62 to 67 points. On the boys side, Portland High scored 68 points to win the team title, while individually Maddox Jordan of Noble won the race in the fastest time of the day, 15:42.61. Saturday’s state meet was originally scheduled for last weekend, but all high school state championships scheduled for Oct. 26 and 27 were postponed as law enforcement sought to find the culprit of a mass shooting in Lewiston.
